Our method

Study differently, not harder.

Most students who struggle on tests aren't lazy. They're studying in a way that feels productive but doesn't match how they'll be tested. Btutored fixes the match.

A story we hear a lot
He studied every night for a week. He reread every page and made a stack of flashcards. Then the test asked him to apply the ideas, not repeat them, and his grade didn't match the effort.
He didn't need to study more. He needed to study the way he'd be tested.

Adaptive in two directions.

Btutored learns how your student learns, and it learns how their teacher tests. Then it closes the gap between the two.

Learns the studentWhat sticks, what slips, which kinds of questions trip them up, and when they start to forget.
Learns the teacherThe test format, what was stressed in class, and what actually showed up on past tests.

Familiar isn't the same as understanding.

Reread your notes enough and they start to feel familiar. You recognize the sentences, so it feels like you know it. Then the test asks the same idea a different way, and the recognition is gone.

Rereading notes“I recognize this.”
  • Feels productive, because everything looks familiar
  • Works only if the test uses the same words
  • Fades fast once the notes are closed
Studying with Btutored“I can explain it, and use it.”
  • Recall it without looking, explain why, then apply it to something new
  • The same idea, asked from different angles
  • Ready for however the teacher asks it

How the method works

1 · The teacher teachesInformation arrives in many forms.
LecturesSlidesHandoutsLabsStudy guide
2 · Btutored, in the middleTurns what was taught into practice that matches how it will be tested.
Learns how the student learnsLearns how the teacher tests
3 · The teacher testsWith an expectation of what the student can show.
Recall itExplain itApply itWrite about it
After every test, the loop closes. A short debrief shows where the test and the studying didn't line up, and the next plan adjusts to both the student and the teacher.

Recall before rereading

Every round starts with a question, not a page of notes. Pulling an idea out of memory is what makes it stick.

Hints, never answers

When a student is stuck, Btutored nudges them toward the idea instead of handing it over, so the thinking stays theirs.

Bring back what slipped

Missed questions come back until they stick, mixed in with the rest, the way a real test mixes topics.
